Hey, You! Just Be A Woman

Easier said and done some days, what with the routine we have to go through to look our best – and the mental gymnastics we sometimes perform to put ourselves in the right frames of mind, but we wouldn’t have it any other way – would we, ladies? 🙂

Woman lounging

Relax ….

In the meantime, a little R & R time is in order. Just in time for the weekend.

Because a girl needs a little rock and roll in her life …

Awww MAN. Whitesnake and Steve Vai. My heart races!

Raw heat, energy, passion. Unashamed of being big time alpha males who loved “hot women.” What’s not to like about this band? 😉

Sing it, gal!

Opening lyrics:

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, and it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship there
See how I’ll leave with every piece of you
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch
And it’s bringing me out the dark

Love this song.

The lyrics so perfectly describe where a lot of us have been in our lives, or perhaps where some of us are right now:

All alone in the dark
No walls no windows
Trying hard to define
Heaven from hell
Standing out in the rain
With just one shadow
Nothing to see or believe
Beyond myself
See my life going by
Each moment I am alive
I keep reaching out, holding on, hoping

Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning
I feel it like my heart beating inside
Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning

All alone with my fears
No words are spoken
A story yet to be told
Locked in my mind
Hope is somewhere ahead
Shining brightly
But the past is always following close behind
See my life going by, each moment I am alive
I keep reaching out, holding on, hoping

Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning
I feel it like my heart beating inside
Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning

Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning
I feel it like my heart beating inside
Somewhere in my life
There’s one light burning
Leading the way, leading the way

Richie Sambora is one of the most underrated guitar players out there, IMO. His debut solo album, released in 1991, proved that he’s got a great voice to go along with his sensational guitar talent. He’s also to blame for my lame “rebel rocker” days back in the mid/late 80s. It was destiny after I watched the Wanted Dead or Alive video. 😀 If I can ever find the old photo of me in my fringe denim jacket and fringe white faux leather boots, I’ll post it here.

Maybe. It’s pretty embarassing! 😳

When you’ve got it, you’ve got it!

Susan Boyle, you’re my new hero!

I loved how the cameras panned to the crowd and the judges before she sang, showing their contempt and disbelief that she would even try. Obviously because she’s not a perfect 10 and isn’t under 25, apparently she was expected to bomb spectacularly (because looks have everything to do with singing ability, you know). But she proved the old saying “never judge a book by its cover” true with that performance. Haven’t we all been in situations where we’re so worried about being judged by simply walking into a room? This woman didn’t care. She believed she had something special, and went about demonstrating it, regardless of any naysayers or nasty looks. And she made it to the next round.

Here’s a bit of backstory on Boyle. Methinks that whether or not she wins Britain’s Got Talent, she’ll still be offered a recording contract with some big name … if she hasn’t already.

Ending the night on a good note

… with a little kick a$$ music, circa 1993, from Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands evah:

Concrete Blonde are officially no longer together but lead singer Johnette Napolitano is still kicking bootie and taking names as a solo artist. You can visit her MySpace page here.

VH1’s Top 100 one-hit wonders of the 80s

Earlier this week I watched VH1’s countdown of the top 100 one-hit wonders of the 80s.  Talk about bringing back memories! Love music from that time period – from the Euro-pop groups to the heavy metal hair bands.  Some of those on the list clearly had talent but most of them faded from view after their one and only hit.

Here’s one of my favorites from that era:

Of course, ‘Til Tuesday didn’t stay together for long after that, but Aimee Mann has gone on to become a successful solo musician in her own right. She could have allowed “Voices Carry” to pigeonhole her into a certain style of music, but she didn’t. Good for her.
